National Pirogov Memorial Medical University (VNMU) in Vinnytsia has one of the longest track records of any Ukrainian medical university in training international students — its first overseas students were admitted in 1961, well over six decades ago. Founded in 1921, the university has grown into a large, internationally-connected medical school with genuine European academic partnerships alongside its core medical programmes.
History
The university was established in 1921 and named after the pioneering surgeon Nikolai Pirogov in 1960. It was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour in 1984, certified and accredited at university level (Level IV accreditation) in 1994, and granted full national university status in 2002.
Faculties and International Students
VNMU is organised around six faculties: Medical Faculty No. 1 (General Medicine), Medical Faculty No. 2 (Pediatrics), Dentistry, Pharmaceutical, a Preparatory Faculty, and Post-Graduate studies. The university’s international programme has genuine depth: its first overseas students enrolled in 1961, a dedicated preparatory faculty for international students was established in 1979, and it has held an academic partnership with the University of Münster in Germany since 1993. The university currently enrols around 6,250 students, including approximately 2,080 international students, and has graduated more than 7,500 international students from 106 countries across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa over its history.
Why Choose National Pirogov Memorial Medical University?
Few Ukrainian medical universities can point to six decades of continuous international student admissions, and VNMU’s academic partnership with a German university since 1993 reflects a genuinely international academic culture rather than international admissions bolted on more recently. With 106 countries represented among its graduates historically, incoming students join one of Ukraine’s most globally diverse medical schools.
