Lviv is the largest city in the western part of Ukraine and the administrative centre of Lviv Oblast. It was founded in 1250 by King Daniel of Galicia, who named it in honour of his son Lev.

The University of Lviv traces its charter to 20 January 1661, when King John II Casimir granted university status to the city’s Jesuit Collegium, itself founded in 1608; an earlier attempt in 1589 had failed. The institution was reorganised in 1940 and is today the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. Lviv Polytechnic is the other long-established institution in the city.
