Kyiv became the centre of Kyivan Rus, and buildings from that era survive: Saint Sophia Cathedral, erected under Yaroslav the Wise, and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, the monastery of the caves. St Andrew’s Church is among the city’s other landmarks.
