Open International University of Human Development “Ukraine” (often abbreviated OIU) is a private, non-profit university headquartered in Kyiv with an unusually distinctive founding story: it was established in 1998 by a coalition that included the Kyiv City State Administration, the Ukrainian Union of Disabled, the Ukrainian Association of the Deaf, and the International Foundation for Disabled Chernobyl, alongside other civic organizations. As an international student, you can join a university with a genuinely nationwide footprint, supported by Study in Ukraine Today, a trusted consultancy with over a decade of experience assisting students from around the globe.
The university’s founders held their first organizing meeting on 30 June 1998, and by 12 July 1999 its Admission Board had already enrolled 1,616 first-year students, with branches opening in 20 cities across Ukraine that same year. Today the university serves more than 13,000 students — including over 700 students with disabilities — across its Kyiv campus and branch network in Bila Tserkva, Brovary, Chernihiv, Dubno, Hust, Ivano-Frankivsk, Khmelnytskyi, Kropyvnytskyi, Lutsk, Lviv, Melitopol, Mykolaiv, Nova Kakhovka, Poltava, Rivne, Storozhynets, Ternopil, Vasylkiv, Vinnytsia, and Zhytomyr. It offers more than 45 specialities across fields including engineering, design, philology, journalism, psychology, physical rehabilitation, biotechnology, tourism and hospitality management, economics and management, computer science, automotive engineering, and law, taught by a staff of more than 2,000.
Why Choose Open International University of Human Development?
Few universities in Ukraine were founded with inclusive education this explicitly built into their mission from day one — the involvement of disability and Chernobyl-survivor advocacy organizations in its founding is reflected in the university still serving over 700 students with disabilities today, alongside a mainstream student body of more than 13,000. Combined with a genuinely nationwide footprint of 20 branch campuses, it offers a breadth of local access most Ukrainian universities don’t match.
