V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University holds a distinctive place in Ukrainian academic history: founded in November 1804 through the efforts of the Ukrainian intellectual Vasily Karazin, it is one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe. Its opening ceremony was held on 29 January 1805, over two centuries ago.
History
The university opened as Kharkiv University in 1805, built on four founding faculties: physics-mathematics, history-philology, law, and medicine. It was later renamed in honour of its founder, Vasily Karazin.
Academic Structure
Today the university has grown substantially beyond its original four faculties, with 20 schools and institutes listed on its history page, and around 16,800 students according to that page.
