V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University holds a distinctive place in Ukrainian academic history: founded in November 1804 through the efforts of the Ukrainian intellectual Vasily Karazin, it is the oldest continuously operating university in modern-day Ukraine, and the second oldest overall. Its opening ceremony was held on 29 January 1805, over two centuries ago.

History

The university opened as Kharkiv University in 1805, built on four founding faculties: physics-mathematics, history-philology, law, and medicine. It was later renamed in honour of its founder, Vasily Karazin.

Academic Structure

Today the university has grown substantially beyond its original four faculties, comprising 125 departments across 20 schools, including a dedicated Institute of High Technologies made up of the School of Physics and Technology, the School of Computer Science, and the School of Energy Physics. The university currently has 17,368 students.

Why Choose V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University?

Few universities anywhere can claim over two centuries of continuous operation, and Karazin University’s breadth — from its founding faculties through to modern high-technology schools in physics, computer science, and energy — reflects an institution that has continuously evolved rather than simply persisted. Studying here means joining one of Ukraine’s genuinely foundational academic institutions.
