Sumy State University (SumDU) traces its origins to July 1948, when a training and consulting centre was founded on the basis of the Sumy Machine-Building Plant. Its first international students — citizens of Palestine, Syria, and Jordan — arrived decades ago, and today the university says its international students come from more than 20 countries.
History
According to the university’s own history, the training and consulting centre opened for correspondence students in 1948. In 1958 it was transferred to the Ukrainian Correspondence Polytechnic Institute, becoming that institute’s Sumy General Technical Faculty in 1960. In 1965 the faculty was transferred to the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, and in 1966 it was reorganised into the Sumy Branch of the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. In 1990 the Sumy Physical and Technical Institute was established on the basis of that branch, and in 1993 Sumy State University was established.
Faculties and Institutes
On its main campus, SumDU lists three faculties — Electronics and Information Technology; Foreign Philology and Social Communications; and Technical Systems and Energy Efficient Technologies — alongside three academic and research institutes: the Medical Institute, the Institute of Business, Economics and Management, and the Institute of Law. Its one off-campus institute is in Shostka. This breadth means SumDU offers genuine choice across technical, medical, business, and humanities fields under one university rather than a narrow single-discipline focus.
