Sumy State University (SumDU) traces its origins to 1948, when it began as a training and consulting centre attached to a Sumy factory under a joint directive of the Union ministries of higher education, machine-building, and instrument-making. Its first international students — citizens of Palestine, Syria, and Jordan — arrived decades ago, and today the university educates around 1,900 foreign students from nearly 50 countries.

History

The institution began in 1948 as a department of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, became an independent branch in 1966, was reorganised as the Sumy Institute of Physics and Technology in 1990, and finally became Sumy State University in 1993.

Faculties and Institutes

SumDU is organised around three faculties — Foreign Philology and Social Communications; Technical Systems and Energy-Efficient Technologies; and Electronics and Information Technology — alongside five institutes: the Konotop Institute, the Shostka Institute, a Medical Institute, an Institute of Business, Economics, and Management, and an Institute of Law. This breadth means SumDU offers genuine choice across technical, medical, business, and humanities fields under one university rather than a narrow single-discipline focus.

International Students

Around 1,900 international students from close to 50 countries currently study at SumDU, among roughly 12,000 students overall pursuing degrees across 55 majors and 23 fields.

Why Choose Sumy State University?

SumDU’s combination of a genuine Medical Institute alongside strong technical, business, and law programmes gives students real flexibility if their academic interests span more than one field, without needing to choose between entirely separate universities.
