National Aerospace University “Kharkiv Aviation Institute” (KhAI) is a specialised aviation and space engineering university with a striking claim to influence: roughly 80% of higher-educated specialists working in Ukraine’s aviation and space industry are KhAI graduates. Founded in 1930, it has trained more than 53,000 engineers over its history.

History

KhAI was founded in 1930 on the basis of the aviation division of the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. During the Second World War the institute was evacuated to Kazan (1941–1944). It was named in honour of the aerodynamicist Nikolai Zhukovsky in 1978, became the State Aerospace University “KhAI” in August 1998, and was granted full national university status on 11 September 2000, becoming the National Aerospace University named after M.Ye. Zhukovsky “Kharkiv Aviation Institute.”

International Students

KhAI began training foreign citizens for the first time in 1992, and its Faculty of Economics and Management was established the same year to meet the demands of that period. The university today has approximately 6,876 students.

Why Choose KhAI?

Aerospace and aviation engineering is a genuinely specialised field, and KhAI’s track record is unusually concentrated: with roughly 80% of Ukraine’s higher-educated aviation and space industry specialists having graduated from this one institution, students choosing KhAI are joining a programme with a direct, well-documented pipeline into the national aviation and space sector, not a generic engineering degree with an aviation elective attached.
