If you are searching for a list of “ECFMG-recognised” Ukrainian universities, it is worth knowing before you go further that ECFMG does not recognise universities. This page previously said it did, and that was wrong.
ECFMG — the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates — certifies individual international medical graduates. It does not award a status to a medical school, and there is no category called an “ECFMG-recognised university”. What exists is a set of conditions a graduate must meet, some of which depend on their medical school.
That distinction matters commercially as well as factually. An agency that offers to place you at an “ECFMG-approved university” is describing something that does not exist, and you should ask what they actually mean.
What ECFMG certification is for
ECFMG certification is the route by which a graduate of a medical school outside the United States and Canada becomes eligible to enter US graduate medical education — residency — and to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination sequence.
- Who is certified
- The individual graduate, not the school
- What it enables
- Eligibility to apply for US residency and to sit the USMLE sequence
- What it does not do
- It does not grant a licence to practise. Licensure is issued by the medical board of the individual US state.
- Where it applies
- The United States. It carries no standing with the regulator of any other country.
Where the medical school does come into it
The school is not certified, but it is not irrelevant either. ECFMG’s eligibility conditions include requirements about the applicant’s medical school — among them its listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools and requirements relating to the school’s accreditation.
These conditions have changed in recent years and can change again. We are not going to restate the current rule here and risk you relying on something out of date for a six-year decision.
Go to ECFMG directly, name the exact university and programme you are considering, and ask what conditions would apply to you as a graduate of that school. Keep the answer in writing. Then search the World Directory of Medical Schools yourself and confirm how that university is listed and under what name.
Both of those checks are free, take a few minutes, and are worth more than any assurance from a consultancy — including this one.
What this means if the United States is your goal
- Confirm the school’s standing first. Check the World Directory listing and put your ECFMG question in writing, before you apply anywhere.
- Understand that certification is a stage, not an outcome. After it come the USMLE sequence and a competitive residency application.
- Licensure is a separate, later step, decided by an individual state medical board with its own requirements.
If your intended destination is not the United States, ECFMG is not the body to ask. Every country has its own licensing authority, and an ECFMG pathway carries no weight with them — see our guide to degree recognition.
What we can do
We can help you identify the right authority, put your question to a university in writing, and give you the documented facts we hold about each institution we have researched. We can also tell you plainly when we could not obtain an answer.
We cannot tell you that a university is “ECFMG-recognised”, because no university is.
