STUDENT LABORATORY OF RACING CARS

Racing cars of brand ЛСА-ХАДИ (KhADI) are well known to professionals, numerous fans, and the public due to a number of unique record-breaking-racing cars, television sportscasts, popular sporting periodicals and technical publications.
The Student Laboratory of Racing Cars (LRC) was founded in 1953 and in 1961 on its base the student’s design bureau was created. Guided by the Champion of the World and the USSR, the Honoured Master of Sports V.K. Nikitin, students designed and made unique record-breaking-racing cars.

The outstanding cars are: sports-tourist cars “KhADI-2”, “KhADI-15”, record-breaking-racing cars “KhADI-3”, “KhADI-4”, “KhADI-5”, “KhADI-7”, “KhADI-9” highway-ring racing cars “KhADI-8”, “KhADI-10”, record-breaking-racing electro mobiles “KhADI-HE”, “KhADI-13E”, “KhADI-2 IE”, “KhADI-23E”, dragsters “KhADI-24”, “KhADI-26”, “KhADI-27”.
The LRC is a place where talented young people design and test unique racing cars using modern IT. Over 30 cars designed in the LRC have broken 49 speed records, 16 of them being world records. Research and laboratory projects for designing new racing cars are conducted by skilled experts from Ukraine, Russia, and Germany.

From 1992 the sport team ЛСА-ХАДИ, organized on the base of the LRC, participates constantly and wins prizes at championships on closed-circuit races in Ukraine.
Since 1994, the LRC sport team with its Formula E-8 cars has been taking part in closed-circuit races in Ukraine. In 2009 the students` team of LRC designed the first-in-Ukraine fuel saving eco-car “KhADI-34”.
The motto chosen by designers, machinists, drivers of the student sports team is “The victory comes with us!“

THE LABORATORY OF CRYOGENIC AND PNEUMATIC TECHNOLOGIES

The head of the laboratory is Igor Kudryavtsev, Candidate of Sciences in physics and mathematics, Associate Professor at the Department of Physics. His scientific interests include thermal and kinetic properties of solid, liquid and gaseous nitrogen, high-temperature superconductivity, development and optimization of pneumatic engines and cryogenic power units, computer simulation of physical processes and systems. The main area of scientific and technical work of the laboratory is the development of ecologically friendly cryogenic and pneumatic power units for motor transport. Development of pneumatic vehicles can provide a new class of relatively cheap and environmentally friendly automobile transport, which could be useful for large cities as well as for resorts, parks and stadiums.
The non-polluting cryogenic (pneumatic) automobile was developed by leading specialists from Kharkiv National Automobile and Highway University (Automobile & Physics Departments) and the Kharkiv Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering (FTINT). Their partners are researchers from the University of North Texas (UNT), USA (Dr. Mitty Plummer and others). Since 2000 more than 100 articles have been published, three Patents of Ukraine and two Copyrights for the original computer codes developed have been obtained.
The cryogenic power unit running on liquid nitrogen (LN2) is intended for converting thermal energy of the environment into mechanical power by gasification of liquid nitrogen; mechanical power is used to drive the cryogenic automobile.
In the pneumatic power unit pneumatic engine starts and runs with the help of high-pressure gas cylinders. Being chemically inert, incombustible and safe molecular nitrogen is used as actuating medium. Liquid nitrogen is obtained from atmospheric air at special air-separating power plants (on an average 0.4-1kilowatt-hour is necessary to obtain 1liter of LN2). At the end of the operational cycle gaseous nitrogen goes back to the atmosphere without breaking the balance in the environment.
Economic evaluation has shown that nowadays the use of liquid nitrogen in transport can be more effective than the use of petrol or diesel fuel. The facts that the cost of liquid nitrogen is 10 times as low as the cost of petrol, and the economic damage to population and environment caused by hydrocarbon fuel combustion have been taken into account.
Taking into consideration the fact that the cryo-automobile is a fire-safe vehicle, it can also be used in mines, fire-hazardous enterprises, oil-and-gas and defence industry. Besides, the automobile could serve as a good and, most importantly, safe simulator for driving courses at schools.
A combination of two types of engines – pneumatic engine and inertia flywheel used as a recuperative heat exchanger is supposed to improve the efficiency of new cryo-automobiles in future.
As estimations and calculations show, liquid nitrogen in transport can be a more efficient fuel than petrol or diesel. The cost of liquid nitrogen is 10 times as low as the cost of petrol, while the former does not damage the environment.
